Welcome!
My name is Anya Kalina. I am a classically-trained singer, active performer and music educator in Portland, Oregon.
I have extensive experience teaching voice and piano for adults and children of different ability levels and in different music styles. Being the only daughter of two opera singers, I started studying music when I was very young. Born in Western Ukraine, growing up I made several vocal recordings with USSR's (yes, this country doesn't exist anymore) biggest recording company and appeared in a number of television & radio programs and live concerts as a vocal and piano performer.
After earning my degree in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy at the Academy of Fine Arts, I moved to Los Angeles, CA in early 2000s. In 2009 Portland became my home. I love the Pacific Northwest so much, I don't feel like ever moving again.
Although classically trained, I take equal delight in singing opera, musical theater, cabaret, rock and art songs, Eastern European and world music and love to experiment with genre expectations. I particularly enjoy collaborations with other artists and have been lucky to teach and perform in the US, Ukraine, Russia and Canada.
I am the Executive Artistic Director and Soprano soloist at Portland Chamber Music, a local nonprofit that brings classical music performances to underserved communities in Portland.

I teach voice in private lessons, small groups and workshops. I also teach piano.
My studio is located in Reed neighborhood in Southeast Portland.
My main goal as a music educator is to instill in my students a sense of self esteem, artistic curiosity and discipline when it comes to music, singing and the piano.
When schedule allows, I accept students of all musical backgrounds beginner to professional.
All styles of repertoire are encouraged (classical, musical theatre, pop)
I strive to provide a welcoming and safe learning environment for all my students. My studio is all gender-inclusive and I take pride in providing comprehensive and nurturing training to all my students, including transgender and gender nonconforming.
Be Inspired
My teaching methods use posture and breathing techniques, influenced in part by Yoga and the Alexander Technique. I strive to help with better body awareness, tension free singing and exciting exploration of musicality.
I also work with my students on stage presence, phrasing and style to help them deliver their best performance, connect to the joy of singing, playing and the pure fun of making music!
I can help you start from the very beginning, refresh your skills, gain confidence, and fine tune old and new material.
